When I was pregnant with my oldest daughter, I had a major humbling experience. Even with years of nutrition training and clinical experience, I wasn’t quite sure what nutrients would best fuel my pregnant body and support my baby’s development.
Naturally I was determined to find as much information as I could about optimal nutrition in pregnancy.
But when I started looking, I realized that there is so much nutrition information that isn’t shared with mamas during their routine prenatal care.
This got me really fired up.
Pregnancy is one of the most nutritionally demanding periods of our life spans - we need to know this stuff! We’re talking about growing humans here!
This was right around the time I was appointed to the Virginia Maternal Mortality Review Team.
During my time on this board, the interdisciplinary team and I developed interventions that aimed to improve pre- and post-natal support for new moms and reduce preventable maternal deaths.
